Ireland has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the EU, under the 8th amendment terminating a pregnancy is only allowed in extremely rare circumstances where the mother’s life is in danger. The right to choose is denied to women seeking a termination, including cases of pregnancy by rape and pregnancies where the foetus will not survive outside of the womb.
On average 10 women travel from Ireland to Britain every day for a termination. The 8th amendment does not stop abortions happening, it simply makes it impossible for women to obtain a termination safely and legally in their home country, taking the right to choose away from those women who cannot travel due to issues of cost, health, legal status or family.
